AccuWeather Releases Revised Winter Outlook

Snowfall forecast for this winter.
Source: AccuWeather.com
AccuWeather has released their annual Winter Outlook, a revision of the previous Winter Outlook released about a month or so ago.  They are predicting near normal snowfall for the Great Lakes Region, which includes Crawford County. The average amount of snowfall that Meadville recieves annually is 108.5". The above average warmth of the Great Lakes this year will enable a longer and more potent lake effect. The eastern portion of Pennsylvania is predicted to have above average snowfall with increased chances for winter coastal storms (Nor'easter).  Of course we are usually on the outer edges of those kinds of storms and receive very little accumulation's from them so it is no surprise that they didn't extend the above average area to Western Pennsylvania.

Snowfall Totals from around the region last year. Totals
were below normal.
In terms of temperatures, AccuWeather didn't mention anything about our region.  However, we are currently in a neutral state of El Nino and it is expected to stay around or be slightly positive this winter which, based off of past weak El Ninos, would keep temperatures about normal or slightly cooler.  Looking at the Climate Prediction Center's 3 Month Outlooks, they are predicting a good chance of above average temperatures through the winter. I don't know if I buy into that so much but we'll see. I'm expecting near normal or slightly below average for our area but it'll be interesting to see how El Nino and the NAO play out in the upcoming months.  Either way you look at it, there is no way of escaping snow for our area.

I'm still waiting for the Climate Prediction Center's Winter Outlook. It should be coming out soon.

Check out my older post on the Winter Forecast.
